Data Sources
All insurance rate data published on Cover Forge USA comes from authoritative, publicly available sources. We do not use proprietary or unverifiable data.
National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC)
Annual market share reports, auto insurance database, and state regulatory data. Primary source for state-by-state premium averages.
State Departments of Insurance
Rate filings, approved rate changes, regulatory bulletins, and consumer complaint data from all 50 state insurance regulatory agencies.
Insurance Information Institute (III)
Industry statistics, catastrophe loss data, market trends, and consumer research.
AM Best
Financial strength ratings for insurance carriers. All ratings cited are publicly available AM Best ratings.
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
Medicare premiums, Part D costs, enrollment data, and plan comparison information.
Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)
Construction cost indices used in home insurance rebuild cost estimates.
Carrier Rate Filings
Publicly filed insurance rates submitted by carriers to state regulators. These are public records accessible through state DOI websites.
What “Average Rates” Mean
When we cite an “average” insurance premium (e.g., “The average auto insurance premium in Texas is $1,842/year”), this represents the statewide mean annual premium for a full-coverage policy based on NAIC data and carrier filings.
Important Context
Averages include all driver profiles (young, senior, clean record, violations) and all coverage levels. Your actual premium may be significantly higher or lower than the stated average depending on your age, driving record, credit score, vehicle, coverage choices, and ZIP code. Averages are useful for comparing states and tracking trends, but they are not quotes.
How We Calculate Comparisons
For carrier-level comparisons (e.g., “cheapest car insurance companies”), we use a standardized driver profile: 35-year-old with clean record, good credit, driving a mid-range sedan (e.g., 2022 Honda Civic or Toyota Camry), with full coverage (100/300/100 liability, $500 deductible collision and comprehensive, UM/UIM). When we deviate from this profile (e.g., young driver comparisons), we state the profile used.
Update Frequency
- •Rate data: Updated annually when NAIC and state data becomes available (typically Q1), with mid-year updates for major regulatory changes.
- •Medicare/ACA data: Updated annually in Q4 when CMS releases next-year premiums and plan details.
- •Regulatory content: Updated within 30 days of significant law or regulation changes.
- •General guides: Reviewed quarterly for accuracy.
Limitations
We acknowledge that published rate data has inherent limitations. NAIC data may lag current market conditions by 6–12 months. Carrier rate filings represent approved rates, not necessarily the rates offered after individual underwriting. Our comparisons cannot account for every possible discount, surcharge, or underwriting factor. For accurate, personalized quotes, consumers should always contact licensed agents directly.
